The History of Mobile Homes.
Not long after the invention of the wheel likely came the first mobile homes. The ability to move from place to place, taking all your belongings including the roof over your head, has long been a compelling nomadic aspect of the human condition.
Historical evidence of mobile homes goes back to the 16th century as merchants selling their wares from town to town adapted horse drawn carriages as living quarters. Living in wagons also became a trait of french traveling circuses as early as 1810 and not long after the abode of the Pavee, the indigenous population of the island of Ireland. Ireland caravan’s in many cases were ornate works of art made from wood and canvas, yet light enough to be drawn by a single horse.

Fast forward to the new world and we find the modern version of mobile homes deriving from America’s love affair with the motorcar. By the early 1930’s the great depression gave rise to idea that travel trailers could be a form of semi-permanent residence. The dust bowl of the 1930’s created a migration of thousands of families west and by 1938 the AAA recorded that some 40,000 travel trailers where being used as a form of permanent residence, in what came to be dubbed trailer parks and in urban areas, trailer courts.
